Translation/Dubbing French interviews for a podcast
Recently, I was asked to dub some French interviews for a podcast about the Côte d’Azur in France. The podcast is released in French and English. Perfume shop owners were interviewed about perfumery on the Côte d’Azur. They wanted me to dub in English over the top of the French speaking interviewees, so they sent me manuscripts of the translated interviews. They also sent me the French recordings. Why did they need to send me the recordings if I don’t speak French? Well, it was important for me to hear each speaker’s tone and inflection. This way, I could perform each recording as authentically to the speaker as possible.
Challenges & Perks
The hardest part of this job was ensuring that I stayed within the time frame of each interview. Also, everyone speaks at different speeds. So when voicing some of the interviews, I had to really slow down my voice or speed up my voice. The energy each person brought to their interview was easier to match. However, my vocal speed was much more challenging.
What I really loved about this voiceover job was the subject matter. Because the interviews were so interesting. The history of perfume and how it’s made. Furthermore, it’s always a pleasure to do voiceover work that is not only fascinating but educational too.
